LOSAR Tibetan New Year 2150 ☸ WATER HARE

LOSAR TASHI DELEK

"Losar" means: new year; and "Tashi Delek": may all signs in this environment be auspicious. "Losar Tashi Delek" is the usual way in which the new year is congratulated in Tibetan Buddhism.
ORIGIN

Historically, the Tibetan New Year was celebrated at the time the barley ripened in the highlands, which usually occurred in February. It is currently celebrated on the first day of the first month of the Tibetan lunar calendar.

This calendar covers a 60-year cycle, and each year is represented by one of the twelve animals (Mouse, Ox, Tiger, Hare, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Bird, Dog and Pig) and one of the five elements (water, fire, wood, metal and earth). On February 21, 2023, the Tibetan year 2150, Water Hare, will begin.

LET THE CELEBRATION BEGIN

It is a tradition that the days before the new year, practices are carried out to purify the negativities and eliminate the obstacles of the year that is left behind. Prayers of good wishes are also recited to attract good luck and start the year in the best possible way.

Losar day is the most important holiday. The celebration begins very early in the temple with an offering of katas, a Tibetan breakfast and the recitation of the Milarepa practice with the entire community gathered in the temple.

On the last day of the celebration, a compendium of aspiration prayers is recited, part of a large collection of the Buddha's own words preserved in the Kangyur.

THE SANGHA

When many people recite the Aspiration Prayers from their hearts, their positive influence increases immeasurably. This contributes to the well-being and spiritual development of all beings, and ultimately helps them achieve enlightenment.

These days generosity, hospitality, a kind heart, etc. are cultivated. The values that are practiced on these special days will determine the rest of the year. Therefore, the dominant mood is jovial and bright.

Traditionally, the Losar day is celebrated with music, dances and a general spirit of great celebration, in which warm greetings and good wishes are exchanged among family, neighbors and friends.
