About Chenrezig in Tibetan Buddhism

Chenrezig is a Vajrayana buddhism yidam. "Yi" means "mind" and "Dam" "commitment" or "support". The yidam is like a mirror in which we look at ourselves and allows us to see our own mind.

It has been and is venerated by Tibetans of all traditions and schools throughout history, who recite its mantra Om Ma Ni Pad Me Hung (Tibetan: Om Mani Peme Hung) with great devotion.

👉Dalai Lama is considered an emanation of Chenrezig.

"We should take Avalokiteshvara, Chenrezig, as our yidam. This practice was taught by the Buddha in many sutras and tantras. It has been the practice of many learned and attained masters in India and Tibet. It is easy yet very beneficial. We should recite the Six Sillable Mantra (Om Mani Padme Hung) constantly, reciting it with the mind clear, empty, unceasingly aware, free from reference, free from clinging, and free from distraction."

~ Kyabje Dorje Chang Kalu Rinpoche Karma Rangjung Kunkhyab.

Chenrezig meditation brings together all aspects of the spiritual path. It allows, on the one hand, to develop the six transcendental virtues and eliminate illusory thoughts and, on the other, to develop compassion, devotion, mental pacification, deep insight and mahamudra.

Om Mani Padme Hung – Mantra of Compassion

Sounds have the power to produce an effect on the mind. OM MANI PADME HUNG is Chenrezig's name, placed between two traditional syllables: OM and HUNG.

🔸OM represents the body of all Buddhas, and it is also the beginning of all mantras.

🔸MANI PADME means "he who has the jewel and the lotus", which is the same as naming Chenrezig. Mani means jewel (love, compassion... skillful means are the jewel that dispels the suffering of poverty). Padme means lotus flower (symbolizes wisdom).

🔸HUNG represents the mind of all Buddhas and often concludes mantras.

By reciting the OM MANI PADME HUNG mantra we receive the transmission of the qualities of the mind of Chenrezig, the grace of divinity: just as we normally identify with our name, by reciting the mantra we identify with the divinity. When we recite the mantra, we actually repeat the name of Chenrezig endlessly. Chenrezig gathers the grace and compassion of all Buddhas and Bodhisattvas.

👉So the mantra is endowed with the ability to purify our mind from the veils that hinder it, to open it to Love and Compassion, to lead it towards Awakening.

(Kyabje Bokar Rinpoche, from the book "Chenresi" ~ ed. Chabsel)

Meaning and Benefits of the Chenrezig Mantra

☸ "Mantras have the power to purify the mind of faults and veils and to make their true nature evident ... their function is therefore very beneficial.

Take for example the mantra of Avalokiteshvara, that of the six syllables, OM MANI PADME HUNG, each of the syllables is attributed the following powers:

- They close the door to rebirth in the six classes of samsara beings.

- Eliminate the six basic disturbing emotions: desire-attachment, hatred-aversion, mental opacity, greed, jealousy and pride.

- They allow to realize the six wisdoms.

- They lead to putting into practice the six Paramitas. "

~ Kyabje Karma Ranjung Kunkhyab, Kalu Rinpoche (posted on facebook Sukhasiddhi Dag Shang Kagyu).

☸ Each of the six syllables of the mantra has numerous qualities. One of them is that each syllable purifies a different emotion, transforming it into wisdom:

▫ OM: Pride, indifference, insensitivity.

▫ MA: Jealousy, envy.

▫ NI: Desire, attachment, pretense.

▫ PAD: Laziness, discouragement, ignorance, stupidity, fear.

▫ ME: Greed, anxiety.

▫ HUNG: Aversion, anger, resentment, hatred, violence.

(Lama Drubgyü Tenpa, from the book "Chenresi" ~ ed. Chabsel)
